This global initiative aims to draw attention to the common interests of mountainous countries and regions with regards to climate change. The Initiative provides a framework within which mountain countries and their respective agencies can work together to better comprehend the changes occurring and the challenges faced due to climate change, and can jointly launch adaptation and mitigation programs.
In line with these aims, the Government of Nepal, Ministry of Environment organized a two-day International Conference of Mountain Countries on Climate Change on April 5th-6th, 2012. The President of Nepal formally inaugurated the conference and some 300 participants from 26 countries, including 6 ministers and dignitaries, were in attendance. The modality of the conference comprised special addresses, panel discussions, and unanimous adoption of the “Kathmandu Call for Action.”
IDS Nepal’s responsibility was to support the Mountain Initiative Conference led by the Government of Nepal’s Ministry of Environment. In doing so, IDS coordinated the Preparatory meeting, and provided the services necessary for the logistical planning and communication of the Conference. Additionally, in collaboration and consultation with ICIMOD, IDS Nepal hosted the technical expert group meeting in Kathmandu.
